Last night a friend of Peter's offered us tickets to a show. We said yes, with no idea who we were going to see.

Turned out to be Jill Barber and Micheal Kaeshammer. Jill Barber I'd heard of because some friends had mentioned trying to go to see her show a while back, possibly also because she's originally from Halifax. Micheal Kaeshammer, I hadn't heard of. Turns out Peter's friend had gone to high school with him.

Turns out both the artists and their bands are insanely talented. Makes me sad that 'artists' like Britney can fill a stadium, while people don't seem to appreciate the incredible skills of actual artists like these folks nearly as much. Woe to popular culture.

We had a fabulous time, even though we were out way past our bed time. We're always meaning to get out to more live music shows and I think last night really made us want to make that happen - what a lovely treat to walk into a theatre with no idea what you're in for and be exposed to these talented folks. I'm embedding some youtube videos so you can see who these great performers are, though they're both better live, I think. Both have a playfulness that is fun to watch. Kaeshammer really seems to enjoy the jazz improvisational stuff and it was entertaining to watch him and his band play around with music and what their instruments are capable of.

In conclusion: it's really good to get out and see some live music every now and then!

      Lisa,

I can't agree more! Although it persists across a lot of music genres.

I love music...in fact, I admit I am a music geek. I love to explore the genesis and meaning of a song. Both what the artist intended and the interpretations the fans put on it.

However, I also take a lot of flak from my peers over my musical tastes...I listen to a lot of alt rock, but also enjoy most of the non mainstream music. They can't believe that I don't want to hear AC/DC, Bon Jovi and others all day long. I appreciate their role in shaping music today...but I can only listen to Back in Black so many times in one day!

Maybe I have ADD, but I get bored quickly with hearing the same songs over and over. I feel invigorated when I hear new and fresh music.

However, the positive side to this...but the down side to the artist...is that I get to see some great acts in a small venue instead of watching them on a screen in a stadium when they are 40 years past their prime! I have seen Matthew Good on multiple occasions in small venues and what a treat!

Okay off the soap box now...except to say support indie music!!!!

    2. I love Michael Kaeshammer. I first heard him with Dal Richards at the PNE when he was just 21. I immediately bought his debut CD that he was signing and have followed his career with interest since then. Somehow I missed that he was in town recently though. (Must have been a combination of hockey and preparing for CSTS Vancouver!)
